Course Overview

Black Country Medical School is a planned medical school jointly developed by the University of Wolverhampton and Aston University to address healthcare workforce shortages and expand medical education in the Black Country/West Midlands region.

The aim is to train future doctors rooted in local healthcare needs, collaborate closely with NHS trusts and community partners, and deliver a modern, socially responsive medical curriculum. The school’s core mission emphasises clinical excellence, compassion, equity and community impact.

However, as of early 2026, the undergraduate medicine programme has not yet started and is pending GMC approval, with launch planning targeting starting student recruitment around 2027

Entry Requirements

Since the programme details are not yet published, specific academic entry requirements are not currently available for BCMS. However, once the programme is approved, typical UK medicine entry standards would be expected, including:

  • High school qualifications with strong science background

  • UCAT/BMAT test scores

  • Interview (MMI)

  • Possibly contextual data or widening participation criteria

Academic Requirements (Typical UK Medicine for International Context):

✔ Strong performance in Biology & Chemistry at A‑level or equivalent
✔ Competitive UCAT/BMAT test results
✔ Strong personal statement and interview performance (MMI)
✔ High academic standing consistent with UK medical schools

English Language Proficiency:

✔ IELTS Academic ~7.0 with high subscores or equivalent TOEFL/PTE for medical programmes.

Additional Documents (Likely Expected):

✔ High school transcripts / diploma
✔ UCAT/BMAT score report
✔ Personal statement
✔ Medical references
✔ Proof of English proficiency
✔ Passport/ID
✔ Financial ability evidence for visa (once entry requirements open)

Fees & Funding

While BCMS specific fees aren’t published, the University of Wolverhampton’s standard fees & funding structure shows how costs and support work for other programmes:

📌 Tuition Fees – International Students

  • Undergraduate (non‑lab): ~£15,995 per year

  • Undergraduate (lab‑based): ~£17,000 per year (e.g., science & engineering)

  • Postgraduate: ~£16,950 – £18,054 per year
(These are for 2025/26 study and shown for reference — medical programmes may differ significantly due to clinical training costs.)

📌 Fees for UK ‘Home’ Students

  • Most undergraduate degrees: £9,535 per year (max) for 2025/26.

📌 Scholarships & Financial Support

The University of Wolverhampton offers a number of international scholarships that may help reduce tuition fees for eligible applicants:

🎓 Lord Paul Undergraduate Excellence Scholarship

  • £2,000 – £4,000 (first year) depending on academic results

  • Reduced amounts in subsequent years

  • No separate application — scholarship is usually offered with your admission offer.

🌍 International School Scholarships

  • ~£1,000 per year automatically awarded

  • Available to qualifying international students paying full international fees.

🏆 Global Opportunities Regional Scholarships

  • ~£3,000 per year for eligible international students from certain regions.

📌 Financial Evidence Requirements (UK Visa)

For visa purposes, international students must prove they can pay tuition + living costs, typically:

  • Tuition fees for the first year

  • ~£1,023 per month for living costs (at least 9 months) — about £9,207 total for visa maintenance evidence

📌 Funding Support You May Expect (Once BCMS Opens)

Though specific BCMS programmes haven’t published funding packages yet, here’s what’s typical in UK medicine:

💰 For International Students

  • No government tuition loans (these are usually for UK ‘home’ students only).

  • Scholarship opportunities may be offered by the medical school once established.

  • Sometimes tuition deposits are required upon offer acceptance (seen at other UK medical schools).

📍 For UK ‘Home’ Students

  • Government support with tuition loans for medical degrees (up to ~£9,535/year).

  • Maintenance loans available for living costs.
